Dietary advice in Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is a steadily progressive type of dementia in which nerve cells degenerate & brain shows signs of wasting. It is characterized by memory loss, progressive confusion, apathy etc.
Dietary advice;
Avoid harmful foods-
1. Avoid foods & cooking method that may lead to ingestion of aluminium (Studies shows increased dementia is associated with raise of aluminium level in body)- Don’t use aluminium pan for cooking, esp. for acidic foods (eg preparing chutneys, rhubarb, tomatoes dishes), their high acidic levels increase uptake of aluminium.Avoid aluminium foils for packing.
2. Avoid additive & antacids- Read carefully before purchasing packed foods like cakes, biscuits, Additives like E541, a sodium aluminium phosphate should be avoided.Avoid antacids containing Aluminium hydroxide.
3. Avoid alcohol.
Take plenty of:
1. Food rich in silicic acid: it helps in preventing body from absorbing aluminium. E.g. - cabbage, lettuce, onion, dark green vegetables, milk, alfalfa.
2. Food containing coenzyme Q10; offal, spinach, potatoes, yams, Soya beans.
3. Also supplement with food rich in VitB12, C, D, E, beta carotene, folic acid.
